Elementary
Our Elementary program is poised to take an exciting leap, building on the success of a first step we took in 2008-2009, when we moved our sixth grade from our mixed-age Elementary classrooms to a stand-alone classroom administratively part of the Middle School. Beginning in fall, 2009, the multi-grade classrooms for which BMS is famed will narrow their age range from three years to two, to allow a sharpening and deepening of the curriculum while still offering the advantages of a multi-age grouping. Specifically, we will move our kindergarten class from our Early Childhood Campus to the Elementary program, and create classroom groupings as follows: two K-1st classes, two 2nd-3rd classes, and two 4th-5th classes. As they do now, each of the six classrooms will have two full-time teachers, and occasionally an intern.
Still using some Montessori sensorial materials in the lower grades, our Elementary teachers increasingly integrate other practices proven by research to facilitate children’s learning. With the benefit of BMS’ well-known focus on professional development, our teachers are able to take advantage of the latest research by attending teacher education programs such as Harvard’s Project Zero and TERC math training. Writer’s and Reader’s Workshop programs are important teaching tools in our classrooms. Our students are challenged and stimulated by the close personal attention they receive in their classrooms, coupled with the cutting-edge practices our teachers incorporate in their repertoires.
