Our Program
At The Berkeley School, we keep firmly in mind our primary commitment to children's learning for the future. From our Early Childhood Center through our Middle School, we are ensuring that our teaching integrates the best of the past with the most informed current research, so that we are always doing what works best for our students’ learning. For example, our Early Childhood program is still built on a foundation of Montessori education, with its emphasis on self-paced exploration and multi-sensory, hands-on learning. But to this, we add practices and ideas from the Reggio Emilia schools in Italy, where the motto is “Nothing Without Joy.”
Our Elementary and Middle School programs progressively move away from sensorial materials and embrace cutting-edge programs like Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop, math from TERC, and practices from Harvard’s Project Zero, the most highly-regarded teacher training program in the nation. We’re becoming an authentic 21st century school, where skills and knowledge are very important, but so are cultivating imagination and creativity, thinking outside the box, and honing synthesizing and analytical skills so that our students are prepared for a future we can’t yet imagine.
